Choices

Here are 30 updated descriptions of contraceptives and other reproductive choices for women. As we have developed these descritions, we have tried to be brief, presenting the most important educational messages.

Each time I speak to a new group of medical students, I begin with these words: " The most important reproductive health problems facing the world today will not be solved unless and until the status of women improves." These reproductive health problems range from maternal mortality, unsafe abortions, teen pregnancies and infant mortality to sexual harassment, rape, and failure of insurance programs to cover contraceptive expenses.

The most important place for the status of women to improve is in close personal relationships. For the contraceptives and alternatives described in the links below to work well, women and men must plan together, commit themselves to consistent use of these approaches together, look for side effects and complications together, pay for contraceptives together and to use abtinence or outercourse whenever together.
