What's your most important message about IUDs? #802/14

IUDs are the most commonly used reversible contraceptive in the world.  (Used extensively in China, Egypt and Eastern Europe and to a lesser extent in Western Europe – northern countries).

1.    Since emergency contraceptive PILLS have almost ZERO global effect (that is the harsh reality), all women should be offered a copper T-IUD for emergency contraception.

2.    Both IUDs may be used immediately following:

·        An abortion

·        Vaginal delivery

·        C-section

3.    Levonorgestrel IUDs (Mirena) and copper T-380 A IUDs (ParaGard) remain effective for more years than they are formally approved for.  The Mirena IUD is effective for 7 years – perhaps more.  The ParaGard IUD is effective for 12 to 20 years.

4.    The non-contraceptive benefits of Mirena exceed those of any hormonal contraceptive.
